The aim of this scheme was to continue an environmental enhancement scheme initiated along the River Gwenfro in 2003 in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council’s (WCBC) Community Services department. Initially, a number of native riverside tree species were planted to increase the biodiversity and amenity value of this part of Caia Parc.
The 2006 project was managed by BTCV Cymru as they had good links with the local community through the Caia Parc Environment Group and a proven track record of success in the community. A draft planting plan was produced by the Treegeneration Project Officer. Following this, a community consultation exercise was carried out to determine the views of local residents.
Once the consultation exercise was complete the planting plan was finalised. BTCV Cymru then arranged a week of planting events inviting local residents, schools, the Venture (a local youth inclusion programme),the mayor of Wrexham and politicians to lend a hand in improving their local environment.
In total 36 native standard-sized trees were planted, including alder, aspen and downy birch with help from over 250 people, including residents, 5 local schools, the Venture, the Mayor Cllr Mike Edwards and local MP Ian Lucas. WCBC Community Services have agreed to take on the maintenance of the trees.
